I had been invited to a roundtable discussion hosted by Gordon Institute Business School in partnership with the National Business Initiative and Nottingham Business School. Empowering Business Leaders Against Gender Based Violence. Other panellists included companies implementing Gender Based Violence initiatives that are externally/community focused. As we were discussing on our table someone raised an issue that most women who live in the northern suburbs are victims of financial abuse because they are mostly stay at home moms who depend solely on their executive husbands financially. I disagreed with that analogy because I know a lot of women who are not formally employed but because they want to take care of their children, they have set up businesses that allow them that flexibility despite their husbands earning more than enough money for their well-being. Technology has made it easy for most mums to set up businesses yet homeschooling or doing the school runs and attending every school function of their children.

Julie Agner-Clark the founder of Baby Einstein states,

. “If you can be successful in business while changing someone’s life for the better, there is nothing more gratifying.”

Being a mumpreneur can be very fulfilling if the venture succeeds and your children do well because of your moral, emotional, and spiritual support because of being a present parent. It takes good skills in time management depending on the business you are pursuing. As an author and speaker, I can manage to multitask so that I can meet my deadlines. Sometimes if I must attend a meeting the children have to understand that I can miss some school events but sometimes depending on the importance of the meeting I can prioritise the children’s events. If you start your venture when the children are babies by the time they are growing, you may have a team working with you which helps if you must balance. As a mumpreneur one does not have to feel that it is 50/50 time allocated to the children and the business.

As the children grow older, they will also become independent especially if you are not home schooling so if you are a stay-at-home mum even if you are married to the rich man and you stay in the northern suburbs being a mumpreneur may give you a sense of purpose. You can start a venture from your passion and hobby and that can help you not be a victim of financial abuse. Motherhood is a privilege to love, mentor, intercede and impact generations. If you can pursue motherhood and be the mumpreneur the impact can even be greater.
